fall for cotton: shirtwaist dress in progress
As I mentioned before there's a sew along going on, hosted by Tasha of bygumbygolly.com and Rochelle of luckylucille.com. I really like these two blogs and bloggers, so I had to take part.
As I wasn't really busy sewing during the real hot summer months, I saw this a s a chance to get back to my usual sewing addiction.
First I thought about making a blouse from a vintage pattern, but I don't have one. I order most of my patterns from overseas and they wouldn't have made it to me untill September 1st, I switched my plans to the shirtwaist dress from Gertie's new book for better sewing.
Well, what happend so far?
made a muslin and adjusted the shoulders
fabric cutting & facing preparations
made the shirring in the back
searched for buttons in my stash - it's not easy to find eight matching buttons there ;)
luckily I found exact eight of these light grey buttons
made a sample bound buttonhole to remind me how this works, without these pleats in the corners
spend some hours making these buttonholes
got some help ;)
and some more help...
and ended up with a dress looking something :)

P.S.: As you may have noticed, I switched my blog completely to English. It is easier for me, to focus on one language. Also the most of the blogs I follow are located in some English speaking areas. That doesn't mean, that I have become a perfect English Writer, but I think writing this blog helps me to get better :)

RingCon and Gertie Coat
Ok, mein letzter Post ist eine ganze Weile her. Was habe ich also die ganze Zeit gemacht? Nun, bis auf den Mantel eigentlich nicht viel. Für den habe ich mir wirklich viel Zeit gelassen, aber das ist auch okay so. Immerhin ist noch Winter und er ist jetzt fertig ;) Aber anscheinend bin ich nicht so gut bei sew-alongs ;)
Außerdem wollte ich ja noch ein bisschen RingCon-Eindrücke zeigen, passt ja auch ganz gut zum gerade angelaufenen Hobbit-film.
Well, its been a while since my last posting. So, what have I done in between? Not much, only the coat. It was a very slow sewing on this coat, but that's ok. Anyways it is still winter and I have a finished coat ;) But I guess, I'm not so good at doing sew-alongs ;)
I also wanted to show you some impressions from the RingCon, just in time for the release of the first Hobbit movie.
Der Mantel // The coat
Der Mantel ist nun also fertig und ich bin sehr zufrieden :) Wie immer gibt es ein bis zwei Punkte, die ich gerne noch ein wenig besser hinbekommen hätte, aber das ist bei mir eigentlich immer so. Insgesamt ist der Mantel auch für Anfänger gut geeignet, er hat eigentlich nur einen kniffligen Punkt, nämlich an dem Punkt, an dem der Kragen ans Vorderteil kommt. Der Rest sind gerade Nähte und sehr viel Stoff. Man, ist der Mantel schwer. Ich finde das sieht man ihm so gar nicht an. Den Abschluß machten bei mir zwei hübsche Kupfer-Knöpfe, das gibt dem Mantel das besondere Extra. Ich überlege auch noch, einen abnehmbaren Kunstpelzkragen zu machen, das sähe sicher auch klasse aus.
The coat is finished and I'm really happy with it :) Like always there are a few things, which I like to do a little more better next time. The coat is very beginner friendly, there is only one tricky part, where the collar attaches to the neckline. The rest is just straight stitching and a lot of fabric. Wow, this coat is quiet heavy, even if you can't tell by looking at it. The two copper buttons wrapped it up for this coat. They are a nice little extra. Maybe I'll make a detachable fake fur collar, I think this would be nice.
Ring*Con 2012
Wieder auf der Ring*Con zu sein war ziemlich cool. Ich hatte vorher etwas Bedenken, da ich lange nicht da war und ich wusste nicht, ob das Flair noch so war wie ich es in Erinnerung hatte. Toll war, dass die RingCon dieses Jahr unter dem Motto "back to the roots" stand. Zusammen mit den Newcomern von "Game of Thrones" war es genau die richtige Mischung.
Going back to Ring*Con was very cool. I was a little concerned about going back, because I wasn't there for many years. I didn't know if the special flair was still there. It was very nice that the motto was "back to the roots". Together with the newcomers from "game of thrones" it was the perfect mix.

Da war ja noch ein Mantel oder sowas...
...vor ein paar Wochen, hatte ich bereits darüber geschrieben, hier nun endlich mal ein paar Bilder. Genaugenommen habe ich heute das erste mal überhaupt am Mantel was gemacht, da mir unter anderem ja die RingCon dazwischen gekommen ist (mehr dazu demnächst). Und dann der Alltag. Wie das eben so ist.
I wrote about it a few weeks ago, so here are some pictures of the making of progress of my coat. To be honest, today was the first day I really worked on it. I couldn't do it earlier, because of the RingCon. And the daily routine. This is how it goes.
Erst mal ein Bild vom Zuschneiden des Stoffs. Mein Futter hab ich noch nicht zugeschnitten, der Außenstoff hielt schon ziemlich auf, daher habe ich mir das für später gelassen (genau genommen ist es das, was ich als nächstes tun muss).
First of all I have a picture of my assistant in the cutting progress. I only have my fashion fabric cut, it took forever, so I saved that for later (strictly speaking it is the next step I have to do)

Aus vielen, vielen Teilen aus grauem Wollstoff wurde dann heute erst das:

Und nun endlich sowas wie ein Mantel:
And now it looks like a coat:
Der Kragen wird nicht schwarz, das ist nur die Vlieseline im Unterkragen.
The collar will not be black, this is my interlining in the undercollar.
Demnächst dann alles über die RingCon und was aus dem Mantel wurde!

Coat Sew-Along
Drüben bei Gertie startet in wenigen Wochen ein Sew-Along zu ihrem Mantelschnitt von Butterick. Das heißt Gertie und im Moment 199 Teilnehmer in der Flickr-Gruppe nähen den selben Schnitt, helfen und motivieren sich gegenseitig. Die Stoffe dafür habe ich, Vlieseline ist unterwegs. Da ich aufgrund der tollen Aktion bei Ikea, bei dem man pro Meter Stoff einen Euro sparen kann, eine ganze Rolle Bomull erstanden habe, kann ich nun auch genug Probeteile machen ;)
Das erste habe ich bereits genäht, ich habe festgestellt, dass es zu eng sein wird, wenn der Mantel aus Wolle plus Futter und eventuell noch einem Zwischenfutter besteht. Also werde ich das ganze noch mal eine Nummer größer kopieren und probenähen. Oder aber diesen Schnitt erweitern, mal sehen. Nun aber erst mal einen Blick auf Probeteil Nr. 1:
There will start a big sew-along over at Gertie's in a few weeks. It's a bout her new butterick coat pattern. At the moment, there a Gertie and 199 members in the sew-along flickr group who will help and motivate each other. I got the fabrics allready, still waiting for my interfacing. There is a discount campaign, where you will get a discount of one Euro per metre of fabric. Now I have a whole bolt of muslin fabric, I use the fabric "Bomull" from them for all my muslins.
I made the first muslin of the coat and its definitely to tight, once its made of the fashion fabric, the lining and maybe an underlining. So I will make a second version of the muslin. But lets have a look on muslin number one:
Änderungen werden sein // What I will change:
-3 cm länger machen -lenghten it about 3 cm
-Ärmel passen zwar, werden aber mit Winterkleidung zu eng werden - the sleeve fits, but it will be to tight with winter clothes
Fällt euch sonst noch was auf?
